New problem
Dealing a better hand
Hummingly is a Kiwi start-up that gets people humming again after a disaster. They create card decks that deal a better hand to those impacted by disaster and crisis.
Hummingly distributes thousands of their card decks around the world, but with disasters becoming more intense and more frequent they feel compelled to scale and grow to help more people. Through the Deloitte Impact Accelerator we were able to help Hummingly reach more disaster impacted people.
Hummingly’s vision is that everyone has access to the world's best advice in the toughest of times. The Cards for Calamity is like having your own ‘experts in box’ with advice, wisdom and insights that help people navigate life after disaster. They support all aspects of life after disaster - decision making, understanding the recovery journey, grief, building back better, bureaucracy, questions to ask at community meetings, inspiration, understanding and managing emotion and much more.
To help make this vision a reality Hummingly partnered with Deloitte Digital in May 2021 to co-design a digital version of their signature Cards for Calamity, to scale their global reach and impact by becoming the digital go-to for disaster recovery.
New ideas
A human-centred, empathy-led approach
Together, Deloitte Digital and Hummingly ran a design sprint to co-design the digital experience. The team took a lived experience approach, drawing on insights from those who have been directly impacted by disaster, hearing from experts and organisations in the field of disaster recovery and key people in the Hummingly ecosystem. Taking a human-centred, empathy-led approach enabled the team to walk in the shoes of disaster affected people, creating a safe space to share ideas and understand some of the core needs of people recovering post-disaster.
During the 10-day sprint, the team adopted the 4D’s Design Methodology. This started with understanding recovery needs from first-hand research and observing how the physical cards are used today. The insight and learning from this phase informed the co-design and development of a high-level digital prototype, exploring what disaster-impacted people would want to see in a digital experience. The final output was a low fidelity digital app, demonstrating key features that would help disaster-impacted people manage their wellbeing, support life-changing decisions, share wisdom from others who have been there before and improve recovery outcomes.
We user-tested the prototype with those with a lived experience of disaster, iterating the app design based on their feedback and focusing on their core needs. At the end of the design sprint, the Hummingly team had a future-state user experience for a digital Cards for Calamity app, along with a roadmap for how to take the project through to detailed design and development.
