What sets Deloitte Digital apart as a creative digital consultancy? It’s our people, and some top talent just joined the team. We sat down for a quick Q&A to pick the brain of our new National Studio General Manager, Rich Whalen to discover what he’s most excited about—and what’s on his playlist.

Welcome aboard, Rich! Let’s start off with the basics. What is your title and practice area within Deloitte Digital?

RW: Thanks for having me. I’ve been brought on as the National Studio General Manager, to help integrate our 48 studios and cross-agency teams of creative, data design, and innovation.

Tell us a little bit about your background and where you were before Deloitte Digital.

RW: Prior to joining Deloitte Digital, I was the COO of McCann New York, where I focused on client operations and workflow processes. I also worked with McCann’s clients to develop operating models/structures, compensation models, governance, onboarding, and ongoing process and cultural improvements. Before that I was at RAPP (a CRM/direct/digital agency) and Agency.com.

What attracted you to Deloitte Digital?

RW: I started in technology and wanted to get back to my roots. But more importantly, my decision to join Deloitte Digital boiled down to the people. Everyone I met seemed sincerely genuine with a common goal, and well, that perspective is infectious.

What do you believe sets us apart from the competition?

RW: I think Deloitte is in a unique position to truly deliver against all touchpoints across the marketing ecosystem. There is a rich history of matching business needs with technology solutions. Now with HEAT, Customer Strategy and Applied Design, and HUX, we can complete the picture to redefine what an agency collaborator can be for our clients.

What do you see as the biggest area for growth in your discipline?

RW: We have many offerings spread across the US and other locations. My role will be to look across all of our studios and create a common language and way(s) of working. This challenge is also a tremendous opportunity for Deloitte Digital.

What inspires you?

RW: As I mentioned earlier, it’s all about the people you work with. Being part of a team that generally likes each other and is working towards a common goal is truly inspiring.

What do you do for fun?

RW: I have two young boys that take up most of my free time. If we aren’t on the beach, we have family with a lake-house, so swimming and fishing are both favorites for us. In the winter we hibernate and play video games.

What’s your favorite emoji?

RW: Tie between “thinking face” and “oncoming fist.”

What’s on your current playlist?

RW: Well, I’ve been trying to get into country recently. Right now, it’s Tedeschi Trucks Band and Zac Brown Band.
