We are helping our client with mastering its green steel transformation by seizing the upsides and mitigating the downsides of their decarbonization business case incl. topics such as public funding and hydrogen sourcing.
Rising CO2 costs and competitive pressures require the transition to a new type of steel production plant. One of Germany's largest steel producer plans to replace the first of its coal-based blast furnaces with a so-called direct reduction plant that can be operated with hydrogen.
This solution can reduce emissions by up to 70%, unlocking a potential growth market of producing green and climate-friendly steel. The investment of over 2.5 billion euros is considered one of the largest climate protection investments in the German industry.
The management and board need a trusted transformation partner to evaluate and support the implementation of this investment decision and business model innovation.
Our Approach
The initial phase involved the validation of the business case for the initiation of a state-of-the-art carbon-reduced steel production plant. This is succeeded by Phase 2, which is about facilitating the business aspects of the plant's implementation. It encompasses verifying governance concerns and devising strategic optimization measures. This dual-phase approach aims to ensure a successful transformation to a greener steel production plant.
Through both phases, a multidisciplinary team is working on issues such as modelling the hydrogen and green steel market, meeting funding and compliance requirements as well as adhering to schedules and budgets. The expertise of the colleagues involved is correspondingly diverse. Their joint task: to ensure maximum robustness and transparency of the large-scale project.
